The Vowed Life

A religious Sister vows poverty, chastity, and obedience. She freely chooses to make these promises because of her desire to make Jesus the center of her life and to love and serve God and God's People in the fullest way she can. Each vow is another avenue in a Sister's journey to allow God to transform her life into His gift.

Sr. Linda Marie, a novice, and her directress, Sr. Therese Ann, sing with the invited congregation for her first vows ceremony.

Poverty

Poverty is not

  • living in destitution
  • an acceptance of the poor living conditions for those in economic poverty
  • a life in which things are taken away
  • trying to be merely satisfied with what one has

Poverty is

  • living a simple lifestyle
  • an effort to use the earth's resources and things responsibly, and to share with those in need
  • freely holding all things (salary, benefits, gifts) in common
  • living in gratitude for all that one has
  • depending on God and doing all for God

Celibate Chastity

Sr. Linda Marie, wearing her veil as a sign of her consecration, receives the Constitutions of our congregation.

Celibate Chastity is not

  • an avoidance of relationships
  • a denial of human sexuality
  • an absence of partnership in God's creation

Celibate Chastity is

  • the development of friendships and caring relationships with God, others in community, family members, and those in ministry
  • a tribute to the reality that human sexuality transcends sexual intercourse
  • being instruments of God's life- giving through prayer, contemplation, community living, and intense engagement in ministry
  • a readiness to devote oneself totally to the service of God, the Church, and the world

Sr. Linda Marie is pictured with our provincial leader, Sr. Patricia, and the celebrants of the Eucharistic Liturgy.

Obedience

Obedience is not

  • passive weakness
  • blind submission
  • denial of one's right to think, ask questions, and be heard

Obedience is

  • faithfulness to the Gospel
  • listening to what God reveals through reflection, life experiences, and others in community, especially those in community leadership
  • co-responsibility through sincere prayer and dialogue
  • loving and intelligent acceptance of God's desire for us and all of creation
